Treatment Modalities
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is a common type of talk therapy where you work in a structured way in a limited number of sessions. CBT aims to help you recognize inaccurate or negative patterns of thought so you can see challenges more clearly and respond to them in more effectively. CBT can teach anyone to better manage stressful situations.
Dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that is focused on teaching you to live in the moment, develop healthy ways to cope with stress, regulate emotions, and improve their relationships with others. DBT was originally intended to treat borderline personality disorder (BPD), but it has been found to also help people who have difficulty with emotional regulation or those with self-destructive behaviors such as eating disorders or addictions. DBT is also used to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress. It is an effective way to treat trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). During EMDR therapy sessions, you briefly relive traumatic events while the therapist directs your eye movements. EMDR is effective because reliving trauma is less emotionally upsetting when you are distracted, which allows you to be exposed to the memories or thoughts without having a strong reaction. Over time, EMDR lessens the impact of the trauma you went through.
Narrative therapy is a form of therapy that helps you be, or become, an expert in your own life. In narrative therapy, we focus on the stories you have developed and that you take with you through life. You attribute certain meanings to your experiences and theses meanings influence how you see yourself and the world. You can carry multiple stories at once, for example about your self, your abilities, and relationships.
Psychodynamic therapy is the psychological interpretation of mental and emotional processes. Psychodynamic therapy is aimed at helping you gain insight into your life and daily problems. The psychodynamic approach also aims to discover patterns that you may have developed over time. Recognizing patterns can help you recognize the ways in which you avoid distress or develop defense mechanisms to cope. This insight can help you change those patterns.
To do this, we explore:
• Your emotions
• Your thoughts
• Your early-life experiences
• Your beliefs
Psychodynamic therapy aims to address the foundation and formation of psychological processes. In this way, it seeks to reduce symptoms and improve people’s lives.
