Following the completion of my Masters Degree, my roles as a full-time Clinical Addiction Counsellor helped prepare me for my current position as a Mental Health Therapist at the HOpe Centre of Lion’s Gate Hospital. Here are the elements that shape my practice and approach to counselling and therapy

•  At some point, perhaps at many points, in our lives, most of us will face traumatic, life-altering events, or other hardships. Often, these events occur and develop beyond our control, resulting in feelings of helplessness. In recognizing this, and that you can change the impacts have on you, you have taken the first steps towards self empowerment. Change is possible and within reach for anyone, no matter how bleak a situation might seem; we can change how we live on the inside, even when the outside resists change. The strength, courage, and resilience shown by people when faced with adversity is a continually renewed wellspring of inspiration for me and helps enable me to connect with you.

• My approach to counselling and therapy is grounded in the belief in the value of working collaboratively with you to develop effective strategies for coping. My goal is to provide a safe space for you to share thoughts, feelings and experiences, and to be able to discuss topics that may make you feel vulnerable. In this place of mutual respect, you are empowered to make positive changes and find pathways to move forward. You may rest assured that I will do everything within my skill to work with your strengths, reduce your feelings of stress, increase your feeling of well being.

• My practice is influenced and informed by a strength-based approach. Some of the practices that I use during counselling for those experiencing depression, trauma, addiction, anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and other personality disorders are:
►  Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
► Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
► Narrative Therapy
► Psychodynamic Therapy
► Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing
► Gottman Couple Therapy (Levels 1 & 2) and,
► Mindfulness practices.
